This year there was no Cavalcade but celebrations ensued nonetheless
One of the most beloved Spanish traditions takes place on the eve of Epiphany Day, that is the evening of 5 January. This is the time when the Three Magi (or Three Magic Kings as they are known in the country) come to visit every town and village and Spanish children receive their gifts.
There is a large annual street Cavalcade (La Cabalgata de Reyes Magos) that is the highlight of the visit and a special delight to children, parents, residents and guests to Spanish cities. The one in Madrid is especially known for its grandiose scale.
This year, for obvious reasons, the Cavalcades were cancelled but Melchior, Gaspar and Balthasar nevertheless paid a visit to the Spanish capital and it was broadcast on TV for everyone to see.
The esteemed guests were welcomed last evening at the Conde Duque Cultural Centre by the Mayor of Madrid José Luis Martínez-Almeida and the Deputy Mayor Begoña Villacís, as well as representatives from the various political municipal groups.
The formal gala, shown on the regional TV channel TeleMadrid, was led by master of ceremonies Jorge Blass and included music composed by the world-famous violinist Ara Malikian. In addition, there were performances by Studio Festi dance company and Morboria theatre troupe.
“We do not come only with a lot of gifts, but also with tons of enthusiasm and hope for 2021 to be much better, a fantastic year that you will never forget,” said Melchor in his speech. He also had a special mention for the elderly, whom "together, more than ever, we have to continue caring because for so many years they have supported thousands of families with their wisdom and daily efforts".
The Three Magi did not forget to express their gratitude to all the people who have been working on the pandemic frontlines during the past year, such as doctor, nurses, security forces and teachers.
The evening concluded with the launching of fireworks in different districts of the city seeking to symbolize that way the arrival of the Magi to the children and make their presence more palpable.
